Skillsusa Robotics And Automation Technology – Nine Utah Valley University students won national championship gold medals at the 55th annual SkillsUSA National Championships held June 25-28 in Louisville, Kentucky. Students competed in 22 categories, and nine of them won medals. Based on the nine national medal categories won, it ranked second in the national ranking of US colleges and universities. It has been ranked among the top five in the country for 19 consecutive years.
Similar to the Olympics, the overall ranking is determined by the number of medals won during the national competition. Utah Valley students received gold medals in crash damage assessment, entrepreneurship (four golds), fire protection, photography, and robotics and automation technology (two golds).

“This is the biggest thing that has happened in my career,” said Isaac Zamudio, gold medalist in robotics and automation technology. “Putting on my resume that I’m a national champion after three semesters can open a lot of doors for me when it’s time to look for a job.”
Sshs Culinary And Robotics Students Advance To State Skillsusa Competition
For some Utah Valley University students, the 2019 competition was an opportunity to challenge themselves again. Crash and total loss assessment gold medalist Cayden Bailey won bronze last year. “Returning the medal put even more pressure on me than I expected. The judges probably didn’t know it, but I felt like they were scrutinizing me more than anyone else this time! But it feels great to bring home consecutive medals.”
The students won medals in nine different events (5 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze). With that in mind, 39 states did not earn as many national postsecondary medals as a single institution.
“Year after year, our students prove that they are as good, and arguably better, than anyone in Utah at applying their skills and abilities under the pressure of real-world workplace situations,” said SkillsUSA Director Darin Taylor. “It speaks volumes for the quality of students, faculty and our programs here. I couldn’t be more proud to be part of such an exceptional group of students.” Polaris students from schools won another national title Two Polaris students brought home another championship title, this time for their robotics performance.
MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OH – A pair of Polaris students recently won a national championship at the SkillsUSA National Competition in the Robotics and Automation competition. Held in Louisville, Kentucky, the competition offers students an opportunity to showcase career-specific technical training.

The 2017 competition saw thousands of students compete in 90 different skill challenges. Four Polaris students made it to the event, representing Ohio in their respective categories.
Joselyn Rabbitt and Stephanie Schroth, both seniors at Olmsted Falls High School, won first place in the Robotics and Automation category. The duo competed in the SkillsUSA National Competition for four consecutive years, representing Ohio as state champions each time.
During the challenge, Rabbitt and Schroth had to operate a five-axis servo robot and an array of sensors and motorized devices. The two then had to solve a simulated problem in the manufacturing process. They were then asked to create a flowchart and a sequence of actions. They were judged on their efficiency, speed and teamwork.
In addition to Rabbitt and Schroth, Polaris sent two other students to the national competition. These students also finished in the top ten in their respective categories.
Pinckney Robotics Team Takes Its Skills To Nationals
David Asmondy, a senior at Strongsville High School, placed fifth in the HVAC category in the Polaris HVAC program. Asmondy’s competition included a series of test stations designed to assess skills defined by HVAC industry standards.
Matthew Hitch, a North Olmsted criminal justice major, placed seventh in the job skills presentation. During his event, he demonstrated proper handcuffing and drag techniques for law enforcement. The Robotics and Automation Project is a fascinating simulation of an industrial automated manufacturing process. Teams of two students build and program a robotic manufacturing system as a solution to the project scenario.
At the SkillsUSA competition, students demonstrate the skills necessary for employment in the field of automation technology, with an emphasis on the team approach to problem solving in the workplace. The project allows students to demonstrate their skills in a valid and measurable way. A project-based learning approach enables many students to achieve exceptional results.
Each project includes all aspects of robotics, PLC, sensors and electrical systems. Teams will design a work cell layout with the SCORBOT-ER 4u robotic arm, create documentation including hardware layout drawing, robot and PLC electrical connections, and a flowchart of the proposed robot program. Once the project is approved, the program will be implemented. The teams are then given a change order and repeat the design and build process, incorporating the specified changes.
