Mews House Interior Design Ideas – Driving down a favorite street, Pottery Lane, one evening, Albert Minnelli saw a For Sale sign outside a run-down workshop. He discovered that the owners had sold the once-disused building of a large house across the street after falling into financial trouble. The structure was a shell, without a floor, electricity, gas or water. But Albert and Margarita could see the potential of a small muse house on this quiet street.

Who lives here: Children’s Fund director Margherita, 51, and consultant surgeon Albert Minnelli, 54, split their time between London and Italy.

After they purchased the building, several years passed before it was time for them to begin the project. The couple commissioned nearby Map Architects, who have renovated other local properties, to design a plan that would be approved for planning. “I have an architectural company in Milan, Sandra, which we wanted to use,” explains Margherita. “So, we decided to use Maps in London, and Sandra for the interior, to manage the project and give the house a London feel.” It is unusual to have two architects for a construction project, but Harvey from Map Architects was just two doors down, and had the ability to solve design problems when they appeared on site. And with Sandra’s close relationship with Margarita, they had the best of both worlds.

Due to the nature of the building plot, planning was problematic; There were several party wall agreements to negotiate and the property was in a conservation area. “The local planning office wanted the front of the house to look horizontal, like the rest of the street,” explains Harvey. Albert and Margarita, on the other hand, wanted to create a house inspired by their workshop heritage: “We went against the planner’s approach and whitewashed the doors and windows vertically,” he says. The couple’s difficulties did not end there: “There were many neighbors next to the house, the site was small and the street outside was a narrow lane with limited parking,” explains Albert. “When we got to digging the basement, the only way to do it was by hand! A digger couldn’t physically reach the site, and the loot had nowhere to go,” Harvey recalled.

Consequently, excavation was painfully slow. It took the builder 6 months to dig the basement. “All the loot was collected in the afternoon, then in the afternoon a truck came to take it away. On top of that, there was a deep damp problem, and a rat infestation. We thought what the hell we got ourselves into!” says Margarita. “After that the passage outside had to be dug several times to install the three toilet systems; it was by no means an easy business.’

During the dig, architect Sandra’s practice, Beltrame Glamati, collaborated with Harvey on the interior design. After discussions, Sandra hired an Italian cabinet maker to make all the fittings in Milan and build them on site. “We wanted to use Italian craftsmen to give it a quality finish,” says Sandra.

Hidden behind a set of doors is a small desk space that serves as an office. The units and table were made by Phallagnemaria Pignoli and the tiles on the table are by Fired Earth.

One of the simplest features of a home is the clever use of light and color. At the front, a street-level window acts as a light house in the basement, while an open staircase filters light downwards and gives glimpses of other floors. In the bedroom, a large picture window is placed to give a beautiful view of the neighbor’s yard. “I lowered its height to focus on the view of the sky rather than the garden,” says Harvey. On the upper level, a retractable skylight acts as both a skylight and access to the roof terrace: ‘When it’s open, fresh air flows down through the house,’ says Harvey.

As for the design, Margherita initially wanted to paint the entire house white. However, she was persuaded by Sandra and Harvey to look for a more sophisticated and muted palette. “I chose London stone by Farrow & Ball, which works well with dark furniture,” says Margherita. “Using a warm palette, we created a pleasant atmosphere without the need for a lot of furniture.”

Every inch of space is well thought out; The shower room is behind the wardrobe door in the bedroom, the stairs to the ceiling double as a bedside table and there is an office hidden behind the kitchen cupboards. The couple are thrilled with the result: ‘We see Pottery Lane as a complete experience,’ smiles Margarita. “We are very happy that we have created a handmade house from a once abandoned building.”

Spread over three floors and surrounding a central courtyard – this home just oozes personality, fun and breathability. Large custom-made glass walls on each of the three levels, and large windows that open completely onto the yard, give the home a wonderful sense of space and light.

As part of the interior architectural plan, we demolished the top floor of the house to create a spacious master bedroom with a large dressing room and en-suite bathroom. We also planned a bar area in the dressing room. Stained glass walls and a contemporary staircase that spans the entire length of the house give this place a real James Bond feel and is truly a show stopper. The living room also came out very luxurious and masculine.

Our client wanted a place where they could host and celebrate. We helped them collect impressive art and design the entire home to give it the wow factor and impress.
